Success!

FROM: Jim

DATE: 9.30.07

Bob,
Here is the result of 90 days of working out for 30 minutes each day.

The last week I was on vacation in Charleston, South Carolina which kind of lowered my work out insensity but helped my skin color -- got a lot of beach time.

I am thrilled that I made the 90 day committment. I plan to keep working out although won't be tied to a video. Breaking a sweat everyday is a great motto to have.

Thanks for being there with all of your support and encouragement. Couldn't have done it without. Let's come up with another challenge once you are done.

Look forward on seeing your final results as well.

Here's to a healthy next 46 years!

Best,
Jim

Jimbo,

We did it! Hot damn! And they said it couldn't be done. Congrats, my friend. You have no idea what a psychological brick wall I've just climbed over. I'm not exaggerating when I say that I think I started--and failed to finish--Power 90 at least 90 times over the last several years.

So to FINALLY complete the thing, after all these years of failure, is NOT insignificant.

There are some great lessons to be learned through this process. One thing I learned is that committing to a collaborative effort to get something done can be immensely helpful. Having someone else who's committed to finishing the program--and tracking your progress while you're trying to get it done--gives you an extra incentive to keep plowing ahead. At least, that's how it worked for me.

I know that when you told me the story of how you took a red eye for work, then did Power 90 first thing that morning at your hotel--geez, I couldn't justify blowing off too many days after hearing that one. I can't tell you how many days I didn't feel like exercising. But by 11, even midnight a few times, I'd be rallying my lazy ass to do that day's Power 90 workout. All because I couldn't get that red eye story out of my mind.

So I owe you a deep debt of gratitude for helping me finish this thing. You are now officially my very first collaborator in the great 13 Collaborations experiment, seeing as how this is my first completed collaboration. Thanks for helping me pull it off.

The Power Of Collaboration! It's a concept that could change the world, don't you think?

I'm also grateful to my girlfriend for her support. Many was the day she'd ask if I'd done Power 90 yet. Not in an "I'm repulsed by your gut and love handles so would you please get some exercise" kind of way. Tamale was encouraging in the very best way possible. The combo of the collaboration and the lovingly encouraging companion were the secret ingredients during this adventure into Power 90Land.

You'll be glad to know I celebrated my victory yesterday by eating a pint of Vanilla Swiss Almond Haagen-Dazs on my walk home from visiting my old friend Ruth at her Hollywood retirement home.

I can live with the fact that I didn't get end my 3 month dance with Power 90 by sporting a 6-pack. I was able to eat my share of tasty "bad' food--ice cream, candy, cake, etc.--in conjunction with my attempts to eat "healthy." Like you said earlier, it's not about the physical transformation that's taking place.

It's the internal intagibles that you feel shifting--that's the most satisfying aspect of the whole experience.

Still, I can't deny that it would've been nice to have a 6-pack in my Day 90 pic.

Maybe our next challenge can be to embark on Beachbody's "6 Week Abs" workout?

Here's the final numbers on my Power 90 experience:

Week 1--worked out 5 days
Week 2--worked out 7 days
Week 3--worked out 5 days
Week 4--worked out 5*** days
Week 5--worked out 5 days
Week 6--worked out 5 days
Week 7--worked out 5 days
Week 8--worked out 6 days
Week 9--worked out 6** days
Week 10--worked out 4 days (doh! WTF?!)
Week 11--worked out 6 days
Week 12--worked out 6 days*
Week 13--worked out 5 days

* 5 if you don't count the day I rode my bike to and from school, followed by a hearty ride into town for a guilty visit to Walmart for cheap toiletries.

** 4 if you don't count the day I took a vigorous spin around the San Francisco Bay on Brad's paddle board one evening, followed by an equally taxing trip down the bay on Brad's sea kayak the following afternoon.

*** 4 if you don't count the day I substituted a 2-hour sweaty sex romp for that day's cardio workout. But like I said, that was as vigorous as any P90 workout I've had.

Even though I didn't exercise the recommended 6 days every week, I kept going. In the past I would have beat myself up for not being perfect...and then quit. That's why I kept going back to Day 1 so many times over the years. I guess the lesson here is to persevere. Don't back down just because things aren't going perfectly. If you fail today, tomorrow's another day to make up for it.

I'm gonna try to go another 21 days. 3 more weeks of Power 90. Why? Because I want to make up for the weeks where I only worked out 5 days--and that slacker week where I only did it 4 days. But mostly I wanna keep going because I want my Power 90 experience to be a Power 111 experience. I like all those ones. Or maybe I'll make it Power 113. Either way...

The paradigm shift is in place.

Thanks for the inspiration, amigo!

~Bob O.

P.S. Did you notice that we both look bigger/softer/doughier in our Day 90 pics than we did in our Day 60 pics? What gives?! Can you see why I'm continuing on to Day 111? Time to ignore the dessert tray and just say no to flour!

sniffing the finish line...or is that just my sweaty workout shorts?

FROM: Bob

Jimbo,

You owe me a photo and an update. Yesterday was Day 60 for you. Tomorrow is Day 60 for me. Are you still on it?!

Last week I worked out 6 of 7 days for the 1st time in weeks. (I'd been gutting out an average of 5 days a week the previous 3 or 4 weeks.)

I'll take my pic tomorrow as agreed. Then when I get your mug shot I'll post them with the latest and greatest.

Personally, I thought my physique would've altered a bit more. I'm specificaly referring to my gut and a hint of love handles. Shouldn't these things be gone by now?

Guess that's what happens when you only work out 5 days a week and eat a semi-regular diet of cakes, ice cream and other such sweets. And the post-9 o'clock dinners can't help.

These last 30 days have to be a serious push towards round the clock smart, healthy eating. So I guess that means tonight I'm allowed to have my last lousy, fat-filled meal. (I've already had a late lunch of Mexican food, with plenty of chips and salsa.)

I'm gonna finish this mo'fo next month in a blaze of glory! Do it, Jimbo!

Send me that photo.

Go Bruins!

Glad to hear you are still at it.

I am still cranking away as well. I had some obstacles over the last 30 days due to lots of travel which gets me out of the routine plus I had a sore back which slowed me down a bit. However, I was able to persevere and I am still going strong. Haven't missed a day.

Attached is the 60 day pic. I think the changes are more dramatic inside than outside. I am feeling a lot more energized these days and a lot stronger.

Look forward to going to the website and seeing your 60 day look.

Also cranking up to the level 3-4 now so as we hit the homestretch I should finish strong.

Keep plugging away.

The horse is smelling the barn on day 90. Wahoooo!!!

FROM: Bob
TO: Jim
DATE: 9.14.07

And that horse would be a thoroughbred, right?

Had a challenging Day 75 workout tonight. When is this gonna get easier? Since I don't have the 3-4 DVD I've taken it upon myself to ramp up my reps to compensate for not having the advanced program. During days 1-30 I was doing 15 reps of each of the strength routines (curls, military press, etc.) and 15 reps of the 10 different sit-up/crunch moves. I stepped all of them up to 20 reps during the 31-60 days. Now I'm up to 25 reps of everything.

And I've still got a bit of a paunch.

Like I said on the phone the other day, Power 90 will now be Power 101 for me. With NO days off from here on out. I may even make it into Power 113. Or Power 111 because I like all those ones.

So here's my weekly report card after 10+ weeks:

Week 1--worked out 5 days
Week 2--worked out 7 days
Week 3--worked out 5 days
Week 4--worked out 5* days
Week 5--worked out 5 days
Week 6--worked out 5 days
Week 7--worked out 5 days
Week 8--worked out 6 days
Week 9--worked out 6** days
Week 10--worked out 4 days (doh! WTF?!)

* 4 if you don't count the day I substituted a 2-hour sweaty sex romp for that day's cardio workout. But like I said, that was as vigorous as any P90 workout I've had.

** 4 if you don't count the day I took a vigorous spin around the San Francisco Bay on Brad's paddle board one evening, followed by an equally taxing trip down the bay on Brad's sea kayak the following afternoon.

No more missed days. No more late dinners. No more scarfing down cake, muffins and donuts.

This gut WILL be gone by Day 101!

This collaboration idea was a Power 90 godsend. Thanks for the inspiration, my friend.

only 60 days to go!

BeBob,

Here is my 30 day pic.

Drew ‘cleaned’ my IBM Thinkpad which I was using for my morning workouts with a lot of water from the nearby sink. Needless to say water and computers are a bad combo so I need to find a dvd to use.

Hope you are still cranking away.

Jimbo,

Nice job! The progress is clearly visible, eh? My girlfriend noted how your love handles have definitely gotten smaller and your man tits have gotten higher. Your wife claims you've got a bounce in your step, too. Damn, what's life gonna be like in another 2 months? You're gonna have to beat those secretaries off with a stick.

Unless, of course, you're gonna use this situation with Drew 'cleaning' your Thinkpad as an excuse to shelve the whole thing for awhile. Now do you understand what I've been up against all these years? It's always SOMETHING. An unplanned road trip, a broken workout band, a pulled hammy, a ruined laptop. Can you see now why I've been trying for 6-7 years to pull this off? Life always throws you a curveball during this 90-day adventure.

So are you saying you need new DVDs to keep going? Or a new machine to watch the DVDs on?

Don't stop now, ya bastard!

Here's my 4-week report card:

Week 1--worked out 5 days
Week 2--worked out 7 days
Week 3--worked out 5 days
Week 4--worked out 5* days

That's right. I missed another day last week.

(*4 if you don't count the day I substituted a 2-hour sweaty sex romp for that day's cardio workout. But like I said, that was as vigorous as any P90 workout I've had.)

No excuses. I'm going 6-7 days per week, every week, until we're done climbing this mountain. The results after a mere 30 days are irrefutable.

Since you've failed to answer my many email questions up to this point, I'm gonna pose only ONE question to you per email. Today's question, which you MUST answer, is this:

Have you altered your diet at all since embarking on this fitness journey?

Me, I still find myself eating crap all too often. (Like a Haagen Dazs ice cream bar on the way to see Bob Dylan last week.) Plus, I've been eating dinner too late. An hour or 2 before going to bed is NOT a good idea. No wonder the gut is shrinking more slowly than I'd like. Oh, well. We've got 60 days to rectify that.

Okay. That's it for today.

Keep those big bones moving!

Hey there.

Diet changes:

Switched to lite beer.
Reducing the amount of fat intake.
Eating smaller portions.

Just being more aware of what I am putting into my body.

I have probably lost about 5 lbs so far but also remember muscle is heavier than fat so that probably offsets some of the actual weight loss.

For example, I was eating some caramel popcorn and noticed that each serving size was 100 calories and the serving size was 7 pieces of popcorn. I had already consumed about 40 morsels so that adds up on the calories.

Keep it real.

Jim

PS: The two hour sex romp would only count if you were not just lying on your back most of the time and letting your girlfriend do all the work.

King James,

Thanks for answering my lone question. Nice to hear this whole process is making you (and me) more conscious of what we put into our bodies. That caramel popcorn is a killer. Enjoy!

Even if you don't lose any more weight, at least that soft, doughy fat is turning to muscle.

Keepin' it real.

~Bob O.

p.s. The 2-hour "sex romp" was a multi-faceted tour de force, with many positions...including some that got me off my back and moving like a devoted Power 90 disciple.

in a groove

I am in a groove with the workouts. I am getting ready to bump it up a notch.

I have never been called Fatso before, more like big-boned.

Best,

Glad to hear you're in a groove. Let me know when you're past "getting ready to bump it up a notch" and have moved on to "I DID bump it up a notch." By the way, does bumping it up a notch consist of going from those candy-ass 7 lb. weights you started with and moving up to those challenging 10 pounders?

Bump it up to 25 pounds, like my skinny ass has been doing from Day 1. You've got 40, 50 pounds on me and you're working out with half the weight I'm using? C'mon, dude. You can do it!

Oh, and for the record, you HAVE been called Fatso. By me. On the 4th of July. But I apologized profusely for it. Did you not read all the way to the bottom of my email? Am I gonna have to keep these exchanges to 130 words or less?

Sorry again about calling you Fatso. You're right. You're just big-boned.

Those big bones just happen to have a little extra meat around them these days, right?

But that's all changing!

Happy Day 25.

~BOB13

p.s. What's your take on a marathon 2-hour sweaty sa-weeeet lovemaking session counting towards that day's Power 90 cardio workout? Just asking.

hey there.

day 23 - still on track. getting stronger which feels good. it is nice to have some muscle mass again. it has been a long time.

traveling to chicago on monday for a few days so i will have to do the hotel workout which i hate.

i assume you are still going strong as well. can you send me the link to your blog so i can read your postings?

talk to you soon.

It's about time you got back to me, ya bastard! I was beginning to think you'd slacked off and were too ashamed to tell me.

Either that or I thought you were pissed at me for calling you "Fatso" when we saw you on the 4th of July. I told you I was calling you that for your own good. A motivational tool from your Power 90 personal trainer. You said you didn't mind. But I felt bad about calling you that after we left.

So my apologies.

Now I'm using other motivational tools to keep you fired up. Like posting this photo I took of you 5 years ago during our old farts trip to Tahoe way back when. Let me know if you've got a problem with going public with this kind of display of your...former girth. Or soon-to-be-former, anyway.

Glad to hear you're still on it. And re-acquiring muscle mass, no less. Good job! How long HAS it been since you felt like you were in decent shape? And how have you been eating? Any late night refrigerator raids? Do you like ice cream as much as I do?

Good luck with staying motivated and committed on the road. Just do it, dude! Think of it this way: by doing Power 90 in your hotel room, it's keeping you out of the bars and strip clubs. (Not that you were ever one to frequent these places.)

As for me, I just completed Day 22 this morning. Day 1 of Week 4. Feeling good, getting stronger. I worked out twice in a tiny Catalina hotel room over the weekend. That's how committed I am. Trying to eat well. But I somehow keep finding myself at the wrong end of a burrito or a mouthful of ice cream.

After 3 weeks, my report card reads like this:

Week 1--worked out 5 days
Week 2--worked out 7 days
Week 3--worked out 5 days

Since the Power 90 program says you should workout 6 days a week, I figure if I go 7 days this week I'll be back on track for doing this thing without cutting any corners.

Keep me posted on how you do this week from the road. I wanna hear how you're eating, too. And make sure you're near a camera in a week. Gotta post those Day 30 shots.

Cheers!

just do it!

King James,

Today I'm on Day 11. You're on Day 13. I thought this would be a good time to begin the cyber documentation of our attempts to complete Power 90. Send me your Day 1 pic and I'll post it with my Day 1 pic.

Regarding the content, I'd like to just post every email exchange we have about the process. Not necessarily to have hundreds of people showing up at the site to read up about our progress. More just to document it for you and me. To have a record of our attempt, to watch our attitudes and habits change.

Not to mention to see the actual physical transformation that WILL happen when, not if, we complete this.

In the process of doing this, if a few people are amused and/or inspired by our stories, so be it. That's icing on the cake.

Also, the fact that this is your 1st attempt at Power 90 is interesting to me. Especially when juxtaposed against my, oh...90 or so attempts to complete it. In fact, I've been starting and stopping Power 90 so many times that I've made that tired joke about 90 times.

But this time is different. I KNOW I'll finish it this go around. Why? Because I've never attempted to do it in conjunction with someone else. So the whole idea of it fits perfectly with the 13 Collaborations multi-media project I'm embarking on this month.

So what do you think about all this?

Last night my girlfriend had my bicep in her tiny little hairstylist hand and said, "I can see the muscle. Your arm's gotten bigger."

Only 10 days in and we're already seeing results!

This after feeling weak as a dog those 1st couple days. Especially doing the push-ups and military press. A week and a half later those push-ups are MUCH easier to pull off.

You're not still using those pussy little 7 or 10 lb. dumbells are you? Step it up, dude!

Okay. That's your pep talk for the day.

Send me your Day 1 pic!

~Ballbuster Bob
